Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports

The Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM or JIMWS) was established near Pahalgam (at Aru) in J&K in October 1983. However after 1989, due to disturbances in the valley, students were reluctant to come to Aru for training. Accordingly, it was decided to shift the Institute temporarily to Batote on the Jammu side of Banihal in August 1990. However, in view of certain adverse reports regarding law & order, regular training courses conducted by the Institute were temporarily suspended from April 1996. The Institute is now (2006) based out of Nunwan (famous for where the Pahalgam Amarnath Yatra camp is organized at – a couple of kms short of Pahalgam), in Pahalgam and is back to conducting regular courses.

Aim:
To expose the youth to nature, kindling the spirit of adventure, develop personality, character, courage and confidence through adventure sports.

Col. Virinder Singh is Product of Officer Training Academy Chennai, Commissioned in 1987 in the Raj Putana Rfiles Regiment.
He brings in the rich experience of having served in the world’s highest training Institute at Siachin Base Camp as officer incharge Training as well as has done his courses from World Renown High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS). He also served in HAWS for two tenures, class ‘C’ Instructor then as senior Instructor(SI). He has taken active part in several National and International expeditions as member and team leader. He recently summitted Mount Kolahoi (18000ft) in Aug 2009 after joining this Institute as Principal. He also actively took part in avalanche rescue mission at Gulmarg into 2010 by sending a quick response avalanche rescue team. During his service in the esteemed defence force, he was awarded for his excellence with several decorations viz. High Altitude Medal, COAS Commendation Card and Siachin Glacier Medal (OP MEGHDOOT).

Brig SS Kahlon was the 1st Principal of the Institute who under the guidance of Late Brig Gyan Singh, and the instructions of late Shri HC Sarin and Late Smt Indira Gandhi, recede the Aru,Pahalgam area and selected Aru as the suitable site for the establishment of the Institute. He in adverse conditions started the first Basic Mountaineering Course with 17 students in 1985.

The Institute has established three Sub-centers on approval of Executive Council. These are as follows:-

• Adhoc Sub Center Gulmarg
