S o m e of the good and known hotels in Pahalgam are Hotel Pahalgam, Hotel Woodstock, Pine-n-Peak, Hotel Mountview and Hotel Heevan. Mountiview, Pahalgam and Woodstock are close to the main bazaar. Volga Hotel is also very easily accessible. There are many low budget hotels around the Bus Stand, and on the hill side when you enter Pahalgam.
Hotel Natraj and Hotel Pineview held the glory about a decade ago - they are a km upside from the bus stand. Most of the hotels have a shuttle service (a car or a van) that can ferry the tourists to the Main Bazaar. Coming down to Main Bazaar is important because that`s where you for any shopping, to eat out, or to have `chat` or coffee, reserve a taxi, or even a get on for a pony ride. That`s the place to hand out during the evenings and nights.

A number of hotels and lodges cater to all preferences and budgets, from luxurious to unpretentious trekkers` lodges, including JKTDC`s delightfully romantic, fully furnished huts, partially concealed by giant pine trees.

Hotels can be booked in a number of ways. There are numerous travel web sites that claim to take reservations for the hotels. Some of the hotels have their own web-sites (see below), which should be the best way to reserve a room. Similarly you can contact your local travel agency to find accommodation for you. The past two years (2004-2005) has seen a big rush of tourists to Pahalgam, so we would recommend you to book your hotel stay well in advance.

In a latest development (Mar 22, 2006), Chief Minister Gulam Nabi Azad has instructed to rent out lodgings reserved for him at Pahalgam. The daily rent fixed for a single room would be Rs.10,000 while Rs.25,000 would be charged for all three rooms at the huts. Read more details here.

Besides hotels, there are other types of accomodation available in Pahalgam:

  • Tourist Huts
JKTDC run tourist Huts are a good bet if you are planning to spend more than a week at Pahalgam. They are not exactly cheap, but offer good conveniences in terms of having a whole place to yourself. There is a kitchen with some very rudimentary things, that then needs to be spruced up. Sometimes, LPG has to be arranged, so has to be linen. You may not always get a hut which is directly accessible from road, so a short hike may be in the store to get to the hut. But undoubtedly, huts offer the most adventurous experience of staying in Pahalgam.
The reservation list for the huts is generally long. So book well in advance.
  • Campgrounds Camp sites
These are set up at different places (check out Pahalgam club) where a `tented` living can be experienced.
  • Long term cabin rentals
Many locals have started to give out a portion of their houses out for rent (after some basic re-modelling). These accommodations can be rented out for the whole season (or year).

KHARA for major facelift of hotels, guesthouses at Pahalgam

GK NEWS SERVICE Srinagar, Sept 30, 2005: The Kashmir Hotel and Restaurant Association (KHARA) today appealed the Pahalgam Development Authority to ease the formalities for grant of permission to carry out necessary works on hotels and guesthouses. The association said this would enable the hoteliers to bring about state-of-the-art facilities in the hotels and guesthouses for the tourists in the next season.
The association has submitted a number of suggestions to the government. A spokesman of KHARA in a statement here said the owners of hotels and guesthouses on the leased land have time and again sought the proprietary rights over the said land.
He said the hotels on the said land are presently in a ramshackle condition and need immediate renovation. Proposing that the government should allot the said land to the hotel and guesthouse owners against a lump sum amount, he said this would enable them to carry out necessary works and made the hotels functional.
The association also appealed the government that in the upcoming 2006-Yatra the community kitchens should not be allowed to run in the tent accommodation. Maintaining that community kitchen besides telling upon the business of the local hotels and guesthouses, the association said they also create environmental pollution at the place.
Expressing its support to the government plans aimed at enhancing the beauty of world famous tourist resort Pahalgam, the association offered its cooperation to all government programmes that are meant for environment protection.
The association underlined the need for giving a major facelift to all the hotels and guesthouses at Pahalgam on priority.
The association also expressed its concern over the expansion of the road at Pahalgam saying the hotels and restaurants on the two sides of the road would get affected.
The association hoped that whatever decision the chief minister would take in this behalf shall be vigorously followed and implemented by the PDA and R and B.
